Overview:

There’s nothing quite like soccer in the Big Apple. That’s why we’ve partnered with multiple pickup leagues across New York City to bring you all more field options! These leagues host their matches year-round on dozens of unique pitches across NYC, and as part of this partnership, we are bringing Plei App games to their spaces in order to fill in on days that the leagues aren’t running.

That being said, these blogs will answer all the questions that you usually ask before you head out to play some ball, like…

Is it a 6v6, 7v7, 8v8 or 9v9 field? Artificial grass or natural? What are the exact measurements? Where should I park? What subway train do I take and where do I get off? Are there good food/drink options nearby? Are there any other cool things to do or see in the surrounding area?

Fear not: all these questions and more will be answered within each blog, so you can confidently suit up, head out and have fun playing some pickup footy, New York style. 🗽😎

We continue our takeover of the NYC pickup scene by landing at yet another Hudson River Park location: the Gansevoort Peninsula Athletic Field.

Located at the site of Pier 53, construction at the Gansevoort Peninsula has actually been underway for some time now, and much of the work being done is finally completed. It’s only one way we can really describe it: a transformed, beautiful green oasis with plenty of things to do.

You’ll find a rocky beach with direct access to the Hudson River, stunning boardwalks, a dog run, adult fitness area, and of course, a spacious athletic field.

In the next section, we’ll dive into the footy aspects of the sports field located on this peninsula.

Keep reading to learn more about this field space, and some important tips that you’ll want to keep in mind before you pull up. Click below to navigate to any particular section that you’re interested in! 👇

What are the basics about this field?

Get ready to immerse yourself in the beautiful game at Gansevoort Peninsula Athletic Field, which was opened to the public in 2023.

Nestled along the Hudson River in the vibrant West Village, this outdoor haven belongs to the Hudson River Park and features one (1) expansive waterfront athletic field perfect for 11v11 games. It is also extremely versatile, as it has lines drawn out to distinguish two (2) 9v9 fields and three (3) 7v7 fields.

If you love aesthetics and attractive backdrops as much as we do, you won’t be disappointed at this location. You’ll be playing your pickup soccer with breathtaking views of the West Village/Chelsea skyline in the east, as well as the Hudson River to the west.

All Plei App games that take place here are hosted by the NYC Soccer Collective, an adult league based in New York City that offers mens, open and coed divisions. They play at numerous locations all across the city; Gansevoort Peninsula is just one of many.

The Plei App first hosted a pickup game at Gansevoort Peninsula Athletic Field on December 6, 2023, and we continue to play here today.

Where do I park/what subway/bus stop do I get off at?

For those arriving by car, parking garages and lots are your best options.

The closest garage is just a quick stroll away from the Gansevoort Peninsula. We listed it below.

Icon Parking (5 min walk)

There’s also an outdoor lot available on 13th Street.

If you’d rather not use these, you could try looking for metered parking along nearby blocks.

Specifically, check 10th Avenue, Gansevoort Street, Little West 12th Street and 13th Street. Be sure to always look for signs that indicate whether you’d be safe to park on any of these streets. We aren’t responsible for your vehicle if you get a ticket or if you get towed. 😅

The nearest subway station to the field can be found at the corner of 14th Street and 8th Avenue. We attached the link below.

14 St / 8 Av (Services: A, C, E, L)

If you’re taking the bus, we’ve also gone ahead and listed the bus stops in closest proximity to the Gansevoort Peninsula.

What’s the best/easiest way to access the field?

You can enter the athletic field at Gansevoort Peninsula at certain entry points on the corners of the surrounding boardwalks.

The photo above depicts one of these entrances, which is at the northwest corner of the field.

Any cool things to see or do near the field?

Like we mentioned earlier in the blog, the Gansevoort Peninsula has a number of attractions that can keep you busy for some time. You can take a stroll along the boardwalks, stop by the fitness area and get a quick workout in, take in the views of the Hudson River at the rocky beach, or just indulge in the extensive green scenery that you’ll be surrounded by.

Once you’ve seen and experienced everything there is to see and experience at Pier 53, it might interest you to check out the neighboring piers.

Just north of the peninsula is Pier 54, which is home to the Little Island, a beautifully-designed island park with striking stilt design and eye-popping architecture. Here you’ll find flower beds, an observation deck and a waterside amphitheater.

Out of all the attractions that Hudson River Park offers, Little Island at Pier 54 is one of our personal favorites.

Directly across from the Gansevoort Peninsula is the Whitney Museum of American Art. This museum features art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Much of the art you’ll find is by American artists who are actually still living.

You can purchase your tickets online on their official website.

Where can I go to grab some food or drink around here?

Thankfully, Gansevoort Peninsula offers a small concessions area, which you can take advantage of if you don’t want to bother buying food elsewhere.

Nevertheless, there are a number of affordable food joints nearby, and we’ve selected a few of them to highlight below.

West (near Central Park West):

maman (Two blocks northeast from the peninsula, located on the northwest corner of Horatio Street and Washington Street.) - Located on Washington Street, this café is the perfect spot to refuel after a bike ride or leisurely stroll along the highline. Take in the charm of their hand painted mural wall & one-of-a-kind furnishings as you sip on a coffee or tea, grab a sweet treat, or enjoy a meal with family or friends.

Simò Pizza (Located halfway down the first block of Gansevoort Street.) - Low-key eatery with patio tables offering Neapolitan-style pizza, plus vegan & gluten-free options.

Shake Shack Meatpacking District (Located a block away from the peninsula, on the northwest corner of Gansevoort Street and Washington Street.) - We try not to include chain restaurants in our recommendations, but its close proximity to the field means that Shake Shack’s Meatpacking District location has found its way into this list. If you’ve somehow never been or at least heard of them, they are a milkshake (obviously) and burger joint. They also sell hot dogs for some reason.

About Gansevoort Peninsula

Located in Hudson River Park between Gansevoort Street and Little West 12th Street, and opposite the Whitney Museum of American Art, Gansevoort Peninsula delivers a wide array of spaces for lounging, fitness and fun.

Built on solid ground (as opposed to a pier), visitors will find a resilient southern edge that provides direct access to the Hudson River for non-motorized boats and stunning views of the River, the lower Manhattan skyline and Day’s End, a monumental, site-specific sculpture by David Hammons donated to the Park by the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2021. Swimming is not permitted.

The adjacent beach features 1,200 tons of sand with beach umbrellas, Adirondack-style chairs and a misting feature for cooling down or rinsing off sand. A large picnic area with tables and benches overlooks the River, and a boardwalk with a Pine Grove draws people onto the site from the adjacent esplanade before connecting with the western esplanade where Manhattan’s Thirteenth Avenue was once located.
